Akiko Yamaguchi received the "Outstanding Young Researchers Oral Presentation Award" at the 2023 Ehime Conference of the Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition.

Akiko Yamaguchi, research staff at Simulation Technology Development Division, received the "Outstanding Young Researchers Oral Presentation Award" at the 2023 Ehime Conference of the Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition. The award was presented during the award ceremony held on September 13, 2023. This award is given to members under the age of 35 who deliver outstanding presentations at the 2023 Ehime Conference of the Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition. The awarded research is "Systematic understanding of adsorption structure on clay minerals by EXAFS experiments and ab initio calculations". Clay minerals are widely present in the Earth's surface and play a crucial role in the environmental behavior of various elements. However, adsorption reactions on clay minerals are complex, leaving many aspects unexplained. In this study, a collaboration with the University of Tokyo, along with the use of the SPring-8 synchrotron facility for experiments and supercomputers for simulations, allowed for a systematic comparison of microscale adsorption structures for various elements, including the radioactive element radium. This research has led to an estimation of the factors determining adsorption structures on clay minerals. It is expected that the knowledge gained in this study will enable a better understanding and estimation of the environmental behavior of various elements.
